Fall 2007 Taste of Chisago BBQ
A rousing crowd at the Chisago City Community Center on October 6th reveled in the great food, and spirited entertainment at the Annual DFL "Taste of Chisago-Italian Style." The Chisago County DFL hosts the event every year to celebrate our mutual beliefs and dedication to the Minnesota DFL party.
The highlights of the event were an energizing speech by Congressman Jim Oberstar and the humorous and entertaining Nancy Conger, who performed four scenes from her one--woman show, "The Truth About Women and Horses."
Congressman Oberstar, Chair of the U.S. House Transportation Committee, brought the attendees up to date on the response to the 35W bridge tragedy. Rep. Oberstar has secured $250 million in federal funds for the actual reconstruction of the bridge, although President Bush has threatened to veto the funding bill. A veto would delay almost $200 million of federal funds the state desperately needs to keep on track. While Minnesota is still in line to receive the emergency funding, Oberstar also noted that Gov. Tim Pawlenty had yet to finish the application for the first $60 million of federal emergency aid Oberstar had helped secure. |

Rep. Oberstar singled out State Rep. Jeremy Kalin and State Sen. Rick Olseen for their leadership across party lines to make Minnesota'sroads and bridges safer and well-maintained. "These guys are working hard to reform MnDOT and make sure the state has the funding to rebuild the 35W bridge and keep working on our local projects,"
Oberstar praised Kalin and Olseen.
Entertainer Nancy Conger, from North Branch, brought the house down with her delightful self-written one-woman show. "
The Truth About Women and Horses" is a series of characters from Conger's childhood and early adulthood.
A host of potential candidates for senate including Mike Ciersi, Jim Cohen and recently announced Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer spoke to the crowd. DFL favorite son, former U.S. Senator Mark Dayton, was also welcomed at the event.
The dinner was an unqualified success with donated auction items ranging from homemade apple pies to a 7-day vacation.

The dinner itself was a product of dozens of volunteers working diligently behind the scenes, including the Kling family— Steve, Sammy. Pam and Stevie— who came dressed for the occasion in their Italian finest. Both Senator Olseen and Rep Kalin joined in the fun of the auction as they assisted wherever they were needed.
